Make your own nut milk

For a little while now I have been making my own nut milk. This not only saves you money, and packaging but making your own nut milk saves you from ingesting all those artificial ingredients and preservatives. Making your own nut milk also gives you the chance to get creative. You can use different types of nuts, and add in different kinds of flavors.

For this recipe you will need a nut milk bag, or some cheese cloth. You can also buy a reusable hops bag from a brewing store.

Here is a basic recipe to get you started on making your own nut milk. But I encourage you to get creative. Add some vanilla extract and a bit of agave or add in a bit of coco powder. The options are limitless.

Nut Milk

  • 1 cup raw cashews or any other raw nut of your choice
  • water

Cover raw cashews (or other nuts) with water and allow to soak for at least one hour (I left mine overnight). Drain and rinse.

Place soaked cashews and 2 cups water into a blender or food processor and process until smooth, at least one full minute.

Now you can get creative. I added a bit of agave nectar and about a 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract. Give blender a pulse or 2 to incorporate ingredients.

Place nut milk/hops bag/cheese cloth into a large bowl. Pour nut milk into bag and squeeze out all the liquid. Add additional 2 cups of water, if you desire.

Put nut milk in an air tight container and store in the fridge. Nut milk will keep for about a week.

*You can use more or less water to vary the thickness of the nut milk, depending on your personal preference, but in general, you want a 1:4 ratio of nuts to water.

Also you can save the “nut pulp” and make cookies with it. Recipe coming soon.
